"Everyone Knows A Tinkering"

In 1986 my husband made "black boxes" for each of our kids Christmas presents.  They looked a bit like this toggle panel, encased in an industrial aluminum box.  The lights went on and off, when you switched the toggle up and down.
The thrill of this much-loved present wasn't that it performed amazing feats, or that it was an answer to a Santa request.  It was that their dad had made it, just for them.

"Handmade" is the theme of this years Christmas World "Creative Trends" show.  Their site, incidentally, is also where I got the gorgeous Christmas Border in my previous post. And their Motto this year is:

„Jeder kann Basteln“
(everyone knows a tinkering)
"Handmade" is a no-brainer for the economic times we're in.
"Geriatric Couture"- the hand knit and crocheted thingies our great aunts did- is one of the top trends for 2011, according to the TrendHunter Pro.
What's your Tinkering Talent?
Maybe you could refurbish an old Croquet or Badminton set, or cover some Retro Tub Toys with Rhinestones.   Do you have good memories of  Home Canning?  Are you Dangerous with a brush?  Here's a great Video on Painting Upholstery! This is a fantastic family present, made from used furniture and "oops" paint scrounged at Home Depot.
It's only taken 3 or so years for the retailers at Christmas World  to figure out how to cash in on this trend.
How?  By selling you New!-Better!-More! craft supplies than you really need.
I don't blame them, and I do support retailers staying in business.
But almost any search on the web can show you how to do more crafting for less money.

The point is, arts of any type; electronic, wood, food, fiber, etc., are gifts from the heart, not the wallet.
and a word to the wise:
If someone says "oh, just make me something, that'll be enough".
they really don't get it.
So just get them a gift card, and bless them with your unconditional acceptance,
while gifting others with your own personal magic.
