Mailing International: Homemade Gifts

What gift is Small, Light, and Fits in an Envelope?

(the obvious "gift card" answer is the last choice, at the end of this post)

Handmade gifts are actually one of the best things to send by International post.
*Their dollar value is low, so your recipient doesn't usually have to pay customs fees.
*Many countries exempt handmade gifts from customs and duty fees altogether.
*They pack alot of love into a small space

So I'm brainstorming how to send artist-type gifts in as small a package as possible:  The Envelope.
One of the most delightful solutions to this dilemma is the Silk Shawl.  I did these habotai scarves in 2007, and they were tremendously popular.

Silk packs down into virtually nothing.  If you like making messes, you'll love hand dying silk. Dharma Trading is my favorite supplier for silks and dyes (with every instruction imaginable).  All you need to mix and match colors are 3 acid dyes (Lemon, Fuscia and Turquoise), and a cookpot,  and vinegar.  You can EVEN tie-dye a set of Men's and Women's silk knit thermal undies, and the whole package will fit into a 7 x 9 envelope!
(seriously! I made some for my mom, for playground duty--nobody knew they were there!)

All kinds of jewelry, accessories, bath salts, potpourris and sachets can be sent in envelopes.  But making SMALL FLAT, LIGHTWEIGHT things for guys is much tougher. I was enchanted when I found this:

and even more delighted to find this!:
How Trick Wallets Work, and How To Make One from Paper!

If this is all too much, and you JUST want to send a gift card, I encourage you to do 2 things:
1, Make absolutely SURE that card will work in the country you are sending it to
*read the fine print  *call the 800 number   * look online  -Find Out-
and
2. At  LEAST  pimp your envelope.
Here is the site where I create all my custom postage.  Real US Postage stamps with my designs on them, or kids art, or photos...whatever you like.
They work on both domestic and international packages, and come in various sizes and denominations up to $4.95/stamp.
Enjoy!
